cash trappingThe GNR detected, over the weekend, attempted theft on ATM machines, through the placement of systems of cash trapping in boxes located in the municipality of Loulé.

This method consists of placing a metal or plastic plate smeared with glue in the slot where the money comes out, which prevents the bills from coming out and, at the same time, from being picked up by the machine.

Victims of this scheme tend to think that there is a problem with the ATM, that is, “that the machine is not working and that the money has not been made available”, explains the GNR.

As a rule, users "away from the site and suspects, who are nearby watching the machine, collect the money".

The GNR puts forward some advice to avoid being a victim of this type of crime, which goes through a prior verification of the machine being used, namely if it "is in perfect condition and does not show any signs of having been vandalized , amended or modified'.

You should also carefully check the slots for placing the card and the place where the money comes out, to see if they are in good condition.

"In case of malfunction of the machine, do not accept help from third parties and inform the authorities, waiting on site (if safe) for their presence", advises GNR.
