ABAE – Blue Flag Association of Europe approved the six candidacies presented by the Chamber of Odemira, which, stresses the municipality, “proves the quality of Odemirense beaches, included in the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina”.

The Blue Flag is awarded to beaches and recreational ports that meet a set of criteria for environmental information and education, water quality, environmental management and equipment, safety and services.

The Blue Flag symbol joins the title of “Marvellous Beaches of Portugal”, won in 2012 by the beaches of Furnas/Vila Nova de Milfontes and Zambujeira do Mar. It is in this sense that Odemira claims that it has “The best beaches in Portugal” .

The “Europe Blue Flag” award is awarded annually to beaches and recreational ports that meet a set of criteria of an environmental nature, safety and comfort for users, and information and environmental awareness. In 2015, the Blue Flag will be flown on 299 national beaches and 19 recreational ports.

Internationally, the Blue Flag of Europe is recognized as an “eco-label”, namely by the European Commission and the United Nations Environment Programme, and negotiations are underway for its adoption by countries from other continents.
