Arrifana beachThe president of the Algarve Tourism Region says that the municipalities "are to be congratulated" for being the region with the most Blue Flags in the whole country. The Algarve is once again the record holder for the number of beaches awarded this distinction, something that, for Desidério Silva, «would not have been possible without the usual involvement of the region's municipalities».

In reaction to the official announcement of the list of Blue Flag beaches, released last week by the Blue Flag Association of Europe (ABAE), the head of Algarve Tourism considered that «this is another notable record in the blue flags, anticipating the peak season of Algarve tourism».

The fact that the Algarve has, in 2015, 85 distinguished beaches, three more than the previous year, may also help to win another award, in this case, the Best Beach Destination in Europe at the World Travel Awards, «the tourism oscars », for which the region is named.

In a press release, RTA highlighted this year's numbers, namely the fact that there are four beaches that join the batch of Blue Flag winners this year.

«Beliche beach, close to Cabo de São Vicente, in Sagres (Vila do Bispo), and much sought after by surfers, receives the award for the first time. On the other hand, Praia Grande, in Ferragudo (Lagoa), Praia dos Alemãos, in Albufeira, and Praia do Tonel, next to Fortaleza de Sagres (Vila do Bispo) return to the ABAE list», added the Region of Tourism. On the other hand, the Pego Fundo river beach, in Alcoutim, lost its distinction in 2015.

A total of 299 beaches and 15 marinas were recognized throughout the country, less than in 2014, the year in which ABAE awarded this quality distinction to 315 beaches – 280 coastal and 18 riverside – and 17 marinas.

And, since it is beaches that are talked about, the RTA recalled that there is an edited Algarve Beaches guide, which can be downloaded, free of charge, here.
