The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere recorded the highest temperature ever in one of its meteorological stations, during the month of May, last Wednesday.

The thermometer rose to 40 degrees, in Beja, «a value that had never been recorded, this month, in any of the stations of the meteorological network of IPMA», revealed that entity.

«Also in the meteorological stations of Amareleja and Neves Corvo the previous highest values ​​of the maximum temperature were exceeded (see table)».

Before, the highest temperature value registered during the month of May was 39,5 degrees, in Elvas, on May 31, 1999. Interestingly, until last Wednesday, the second highest value ever was registered in Elvas Northern region of the country, more specifically in Aveiro, on May 21, 2010 (39 degrees).

The public institute added that on May 13, “at about 45 percent of IPMA's meteorological stations, maximum temperature values ​​were recorded above 30 degrees centigrade, and above 35 degrees in about 16 percent.

High temperatures and dry weather, accompanied by moderate to strong wind, will continue to be felt in the south of the country, at least until Monday, which advises care when walking on the street and, of course, care with attitudes that could set off fires, such as making fires in rural or forest areas or launching pyrotechnic devices.
