luna map“Memories of an Explorer – The Henrique de Carvalho Expedition (1884 – 1888)” is the title of the exhibition that opens on Monday, May 18, at the Municipal Museum of Lagos, as part of the celebrations of the International Day of Museums 2015 On this day, the Museum can be visited for free.

At 16:30 pm, the exhibition is scheduled to be presented by curator Manuela Cantinho, as well as a guided tour of the Museum, which will be exceptionally open on a Monday.

The military and scientist Major Augusto Henrique Dias de Carvalho (1843-1909), in May 1884, started a long and hard expedition from Malanje (Angola) whose main objective was to reach Mussumba, the capital of the mythical Lunda Empire. , located in the present Democratic Republic of Congo.

During this trip, which lasted about four years, the expedition created scientific collections in the field of ethnography, fauna and flora, as well as a record of meteorological observations, a photographic album and the publication of a work in eight volumes. It is part of everything that can be known here.

Major Augusto Henrique Dias de CarvalhoThe exhibition, organized by the Lisbon Geography Society and the Military History and Culture Directorate, will run until 26 July and officially open on 23 May at 16 pm.

On Mondays, the Church of Santo António can also be visited free of charge, one of the main attractions of the Municipal Museum, whose exterior simplicity contrasts with the profusion of decorative interior, in which the gilded carving covers all the walls.

In addition to the details that can be found on some of the pilasters of this carving, you can also get to know the delicate pulpit, the altarpiece, the magnificent altarpiece, the albarrada tiles and the paintings depicting eight miracles of the patron saint of the Church: Santo António.

“Museums for a sustainable society” is the theme chosen for the 2015 International Museum Day celebrations.

“One of the most important contemporary challenges, shared by people all over the world, is adapting to new ways of living and development that respects the limits of nature. This transition to a sustainable society requires the search for new ways of thinking and acting. Museums play a key role in this transition, promoting sustainable development and serving as true laboratories for best practices. Contemporary Museums must take a strong position in this context and make their voice heard”.

The theme, quite relevant and current like the previous ones, intends to leverage, once again, the role of museums in the discussion and call for a more efficient use of the planet's resources, for cooperation between different countries and regions of the globe and for the necessary respect for the diversity of nature.
