Marquês dos Vales Grace Touriga Nacional IG Algarve Red 2011 was the winner of the seventh edition of the Algarve Wine Contest/Fatacil 2015, which took place this Monday, at the Convento de São José, in Lagoa.
The competition's jury, made up of national experts, awarded medals to 24 of the 77 wines in the competition, which represented 19 producers in the region. There was, moreover, a record participation in the contest, in 2015, "both in terms of the number of references submitted and the number of producers in the contest", he revealed to the Sul informação Carlos Garcias, president of the Algarve Wine Commission, the entity that promotes the competition in partnership with the Câmara de Lagoa and the Portuguese Sommelier Association.
“This seventh edition went very well. The sommeliers left satisfied and conveyed to us that they felt there was something new this year compared to the previous ones», he illustrated.
The “Best Algarve Wine” Medal was awarded to the wine from Quinta dos Vales, in Estômbar, Lagoa. The Gold Medal was awarded to three references: Porches IG Algarve Red 2013, from Única – Adega Cooperativa do Algarve, Quinta de Ferrel Reserva DO Lagos Red 2013, from Sociedade Agrícola Herdade dos Seromenhos, and Quinta do Francês IG Algarve White 2013, by Patrick Agostini.
Seven Silver Medals and 13 Bronze Medals were also awarded to wines produced by several of the contesting producers (see full list below).
For Carlos Garcia, this increase in references and producers in the competition accounts for the regional reality of wine production, which has also been growing.
At the moment, there are 34 economic agents linked to the production sector, although three of them are still in the installation phase and do not have references in the market.
«The perspective that exists is one of growth, both at the level of producers and the area of vines. They are essentially private producers, to the detriment of cooperative wineries”, revealed the president of the CVA, who highlighted the fact that “one third of these producers are foreigners or Portuguese descendants”, which could help the internationalization of the region's wines.
“Currently, the quality factor is being strengthened instead of quantity. We have a small production, but our wines are increasingly recognized and stand out in this way», defended Carlos Garcia.
The official awards ceremony will take place in August, during Fatacil 2015, the fair to which this competition is associated.
