algarve winesThe VIII Algarve Wine Contest will take place on the 25th of May, at the Convento de S. José, in Lagoa.

Organized by the Algarve Regional Wine Commission (CVR), in partnership with the Municipality of Lagoa and the Association of Sommeliers of Portugal, the competition aims to award distinctions to the best bottled wines in the Algarve region.

The Algarve Wine Contest is open to white, rosé and red wines produced in the Algarve Wine Region, entitled to the Protected Designation of Origin Lagos, Lagoa, Portimão and Tavira and Geographical Indication Algarve.

About 80 references are expected to participate, evaluated by a panel of tasters/sungs.

Producers can submit more than one wine from each category to the competition.

After the competition, the following distinctions will be awarded: Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals and also the Great Gold Medal – The Best Wine in the Algarve.

The wines admitted to the competition are evaluated in a blind tasting, to be carried out by a group of tasters made up of panels. Each panel of judges is made up of a minimum number of five judges and a president.

Alongside the contest, and for the first time, the CVR Algarve will even organize a press tour by Algarve producers, so that journalists can get to know the current reality of Algarve wine.

«This is an important event, as we want to make consumers aware of the quality that the wines have achieved over the last few years» says Carlos Gracias, president of CVR Algarve.

«We are sure that the results will surprise because we believe in the quality of our wines», he concludes.
