Antonio BrancoThe Rector of the University of Algarve (Ualg) António Branco is in Japan to sign cooperation protocols with the Japanese universities of Kinki and Hokkaido. The two agreements will be signed this Thursday, in Kyoto.

The signing of these protocols takes place during the Portuguese Government's official visit to Japan, led by Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, with the aim of strengthening economic, scientific and cultural ties between the two countries.

The collaboration protocol with the University of Kinki, which, in addition to UAlg, counts as the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) as a partner, «intends to foster academic and scientific exchange, with a particular focus on research into the production of tuna in aquaculture'.

The collaboration between UAlg and the University of Hokkaido started in 2013, fostered by professors and researchers in the areas of the sea and chemistry.

«The memorandum of collaboration that will be signed, in addition to the academic exchange relations that includes students, professors and researchers, also aims to formalize the association of the Japanese university as a partner in the Erasmus Mundus EMMC-ChIR (Chemical Innovation and Regulation) project, coordinated by the University of Algarve, pioneer institution in Portugal of the Erasmus Mundus program», revealed UAlg, in a press release.
