Fuzeta barDredging in the Ria Formosa should proceed "after Easter". Polis Ria Formosa will sign the contract for three works for desilting of bars and channels in the lagoon area this week and these will start as soon as it receives a visa from the Court of Auditors.

As soon as there is a green light for the progress of the works, the interventions should take «three to four months» to be completed, which leads Sebastião Teixeira, president of Sociedade Polis Ria Formosa, to anticipate that everything will be completed «well before the end of the year'.

Sebastião Teixeira revealed to Sul Informação that the process of public tenders for dredging in Barra de Tavira, Barra de Faro-Olhão and Barra do Ancão (Barrinha), and the channels that serve them, are already very advanced and practically ready to close.

Ship wrecked at Barra da Armona_1“About a week or two late” is the process in Barra do Lavajo, between the islands of Armona and Culatra, as a first contest “was deserted”, with a second already underway. It was in this bar that, in October of last year, a fisherman died, in an accident allegedly caused by problems created by the siltation of the area.

The works to be advanced soon are the desilting of the «Barra de Tavira, the Cabanas and Santa Luzia canal, with reinforcement of the Praia de Cabanas», of the «Barra Faro-Olhão and the access channel, with reinforcement of Praia do Farol” and “Barra do Ancão, with removal of the channel that gives access to it and the Ramalhete channel, with the opening of a new bar and reinforcement of the Ancão Peninsula”, revealed Sebastião Teixeira.

In the case of Barra do Lavajo, in addition to the dredging of this connection between the Sea and the Ria Formosa, the Culatra channel will be removed and the beach of the housing nucleus with the same name will be reinforced.

Dredging in these areas of the Ria Formosa is an old aspiration of fishing and shellfish professionals, as well as the municipalities of Olhão, Faro and Tavira.

The absence of dredging has been an argument used in protests against the demolitions on the barrier islands, as they are considered essential not only for environmental reasons, for better oxygenation and renewal of the waters in the lagoon system, but also for reasons of navigability and safety.
