The Parish Council of Olhão admits to resorting to the courts to see the level crossing for pedestrians reactivated closed a few months ago by REFER, next to the railway station in Olhão.
The entity from Olhano says it does not agree with the solution found, after the negotiations that took place between the company and the Chamber of Olhão – in which, he stresses, he never participated – because it is “a highly time-consuming process, with no end in sight, and with a very high cost for the public purse”.
In addition, and despite REFER's commitment to fully fund the work, «the truth is that, according to the information available, there is no protocol or any type of document signed in this regard, it has not even been defined a maximum ceiling for budgeting work».
So, instead of the solution on the table – “keep the level crossing closed and carry out a leveling work on the footpaths” of the tunnel that connects Bernardino da Silva and República avenues – the Parish Council wants that the level crossing be reset, "in accordance with the legal safety standards in force and implemented by REFER itself in other city crossings, namely in Faro and Tavira».
What will not be within the legal norms, he claims, is the alternative proposed by REFER, the crossing of a tunnel with a high slope, which leads FF de Olhão to "consider going to court, so that legality and justice can be restored that our people deserve and for whom we fight and we will always fight, until the last circumstances».
At the same time, he urges «the new president of REFER so that, in the use of his common sense, sensitivity to a problem that was not his, reading capacity and responsibility in what is the defense of the interests of the populations and the public purse, the most assertive and unique decision”, that is, the reopening of the level crossing.
"As we have always defended, the only solution, with total security, application of the law in force (contrary to REFER's arguments), much lower costs and which defends the true interests of the Olhanense population, is the immediate reopening of the level crossing, with the works proposed by us, to replace the infrastructure that existed there five months ago and increase safety conditions», defends JF de Olhão.
