philip saintsThis Sunday, the Algarve native Filipe Santos set a new World record for Down Syndrome in the 50 meters moth, in the S21 category, in the Adapted Swimming National Winter Championship, which took place at the Vila Franca de Xira Municipal Swimming Pool.

The FC Ferreiras swimmer recorded a mark of 32,68, below the previous world maximum of 34,00 that had been held by Italian Paolo Manauzzi since 2012.

For his part, João Pina guaranteed the minimum for the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. The Gesloures swimmer, in category S2, registered 5.50,53 in the 200 freestyles.

“I was hoping to get the minimums, but a better time came out of what I expected. They are good indicators for the rest of the season. I still want to improve this brand further to definitely guarantee my presence in the Paralympic Games”, said the athlete at the end of the competition.
