O_Surf_na_Serra_do_Caldeirão_01The project of «Surfing at Serra do Caldeirão», from the students of the Professional Technical Support Course for Sports Management at the José Belchior Viegas Secondary School, in São Brás de Alportel, is one of the finalists of the 7th edition of the Green Project Awards Portugal, whose awards are given tomorrow, at Culturgest, in Lisbon.

This is an innovative project of surfboards made from recycled corks, developed by students in the 3rd year of the Professional Sports Management Support Technician Course, under the guidance of Professor Rui Beijoca.

This project involves the construction of boards made from a specific raw material – the reuse of cork stoppers, an ecological and clean material. This reuse will allow, for now, results in terms of fluctuation, reduction of production costs, reuse of materials and implementation of a new industry.

The project «Surf at Serra do Caldeirão» is one of the finalists in the category Youth Initiative.

The Awards Ceremony of the Green Project Awards Portugal also marks the holding of the VI GPA Conference dedicated to the theme of “Green Economy”.

GPA Portugal 2014 will award the best projects in the Agriculture, Sea and Tourism categories; Sustainable Cities; Sustainable consumption; Information Technology; Youth Initiative; Mobilization Initiative; Product or Service.

The applications, audited by KPMG, were evaluated by a jury that had the Portuguese Environment Agency as its chairman and Quercus as its vice-chairman.

The 7th edition of the Green Project Awards will also be marked by the "Green Economy" conference, which aims to promote the debate on the green economy in Portugal, understand the contributions of the sectors of Agriculture, Sea, Environment, Energy and Tourism to growth economic and demystifying the financing of green growth, among others.

GPA Portugal has the High Sponsorship of the Presidency of the Republic, with institutional support from the European Commission and CPLP – in addition to the Government of Portugal and the main non-governmental organizations, business associations and sector specialists. Present in Portugal, Brazil and Cape Verde, throughout its six editions, the Green Project Awards have already distinguished more than 60 projects in Portugal, with a total of 1000 applications.
