Lagoon wine show copyThe «Lagoa Wine Show», scheduled for the Centro de Congressos do Arade, in Parchal, from 2 to 4 April, is the event that will launch a year entirely dedicated to wine in this municipality.

Organized by the Câmara de Lagoa, in partnership with the Algarve Wine Route, and taking advantage of the Easter weekend, the initiative «will represent a tribute to farmers, consumers and those who work for a region and a product that is a references of the county», highlighted the municipality, in a press release.

The «Lagoa Wine Show» aims to be one of the largest wine shows in the south of the country, where the most renowned producers, from the various wine regions, will present their wines, in a space with more than 1000 square meters of exhibition space.

Regional flavors (cheese, sausages, oils, delicacies), wine accessories will also be present, in a program that includes debates, lectures and entertainment.

Lagoa, which, above all in the first half of the XNUMXth century, established itself as a land of wine production, known throughout the country, has been witnessing the transformation of the sector. The former Adega Cooperativa – today called Adega Única, as it is, in fact, the only cooperative still existing in the Algarve – is in rapid decline, both in terms of production and facilities, but private producers have been asserting themselves, with its farm wines and betting on new varieties, new techniques and, above all, a new attitude towards the market.

According to the Algarve Wine Route, “there are numerous references to the tradition and importance of vines in the Algarve. It is thought that several peoples introduced wine production in the region: Phoenicians, Greeks and Celts. There are also important references about wine, such as those described in the “Foral de Tavira” (1266) by D. Afonso III, or in the “Foral de Porches” (1286) by D. Dinis».

The “Algarve wines” are produced in this precious “terroir”, through the vinification of its most traditional varieties: Syria, Moscatel, Arinto, Negra-Mole, Trincadeira, Aragonês or Castelão, obtaining elegant, balanced and easy-drinking nectars. .

vineyard alentejo_2The production of white and rosé wines is in a phase of great expansion, being these practically consumed during the summer, in line with the tourist flow in the region.

Wine is also, in terms of tourism offer, a complementary product with strong power of attraction, combining history with regional culture and gastronomy, also enhancing rural tourism and nature tourism.

The Algarve Demarcated Region dates back to 1980, is located in the extreme south of Portugal and geographically coincides with the district of Faro. Its entire area corresponds to the production area of the Algarve Regional Wine and the “Algarve” Geographical Indication Liqueur Wine.

In the coastal area, bordering the Atlantic/Mediterranean coast, are located the four wine producing regions of “Denomination of Origin”: DOC Lagos, DOC Lagoa, DOC Portimão and DOC Tavira.

The region intends to assert itself, not for the quantity, but for the quality and specificity of its productions which, combined with its unique location, with Mediterranean and Atlantic influence, gives special characteristics to the wines produced here, essentially determined by the "terroir" and competence of the winegrower and oenologist, which could be classified as “author wines”.

The Algarve wine region is in a phase of growing notoriety, arousing the interest of national and international critics and experts.

As for the quality of the “Algarve Wines”, this has also been recognized, from which the various distinctions obtained in prestigious national and international competitions stand out.

After, in 2014, the Câmara de Lagoa dedicated the year to the Sea, this time, in 2015, the theme will be Wine, which will form the basis of many initiatives in the municipality over the months.
