Iberian lynxThe first section of the thematic route “On the Iberian Lynx Route”, which will take the visitor from Silves to the surroundings of the Arade dam, where the “Miradouro do Lince” was created, where the CNRLI can be observed -National Center for the Reproduction of the Iberian Lynx, will be inaugurated on Tuesday, December 16th.

On the same day, the exhibition “On the Iberian Lynx” will be inaugurated at Castelo de Silves, showing that it intends to bring to the public knowledge the characteristics and reasons that make this the most endangered feline species on the planet.

But, more importantly, this will be the day when predicts the first reintroduction into nature, in Portugal, of two Iberian lynxes bred in captivity at the CNRLI in Silves. This partial release will take place in a fenced area in the Guadiana valley, in the municipality of Mértola.

However, the exhibition that will open at Castelo de Silves presents a historical perspective of the occurrence of this animal in the Iberian Peninsula, its recent disappearance from Portuguese territory and the efforts that have been made to reintroduce it into a natural environment, which is now materialize, with the release scheduled for the same day in the region of the Vale do Guadiana Natural Park.

The exhibition also seeks to make known the morphological and behavioral particularities of lynxes, the threats, their habitats and preferential prey, and highlight the importance of this species in the balance of the ecosystems where it occurs.

This set of events is the result of a joint organization between the Municipality of Silves, Águas do Algarve and the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF).
