The tenth edition of the “Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen” Literary Contest, an initiative of the Councils of Lagos and Loulé, through the respective municipal libraries, will now start, those municipalities announced.
The competition's main objective is to encourage reading among the youngest of the works of this well-known writer.
According to the regulations, works of poetry, prose or essays (in Portuguese) and illustrations (original and unpublished up to the date of the final decision) that focus on the literary work of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen are admitted to the competition.
All students who attend schools of the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and Secondary Education Schools, or equivalent, in the Algarve region can submit works.
Works must be delivered by March 20, 2015 (inclusive) to the Municipal Library of Lagos Dr. Júlio Dantas or to the Municipal Library of Loulé, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (post date).
This competition intends to have an annual periodicity and the awards ceremony takes place, in rotation, in one of the two libraries, on the weekend closest to the 23rd of April, “World Book Day”. In this edition, the delivery is scheduled to take place in Loulé, on the 18th of April.
For the two types of competition, there is a single jury, consisting of a representative of the Municipality of Lagos, another of Loulé, a representative of the General Directorate of Books, Archives and Libraries, a representative of the Regional Directorate of Education of the Algarve and a guest writer.
Two prizes will be awarded for each level of education and for each category, being given out on gift cards to be collected from local bookstores in Lagos or Loulé.
The Municipal Councils of Lagos and Loulé are the holders of all works, reserving for themselves the rights to disclose or publish them.
