The councilors elected to the Chamber of Olhão unanimously approved, in a Chamber Meeting, "to instruct the municipal services to urgently study and present several technically viable proposals", which may, in the future, be presented to REFER , so that the company can, as promised, finance an alternative to the closed level crossing at the Olhão Station.
In a press release, whose text was also unanimously elected by the councilors, PS (3), PSD (2), CDU (1) and BE (1) elected from the Olhão Chamber, the municipality explained again that, in a meeting held with REFER, it was found that this was the only viable solution, without resorting to the courts.
At the meeting between the company that manages the railway infrastructure in Portugal and the municipality of Olho, in which the four parties with councilors were present, «the elements of the municipal executive body reinforced the need for reopening and maintenance, with the proper security mechanisms, of the Pedestrian level crossing located on Av. Dr. Bernardino da Silva, a position with which REFER disagreed arguing the legal impossibility of its reopening».
«The company responsible for the railway structures justified, after the Municipality's insistence on maintaining the pedestrian level crossing, that only the recourse to the Courts could enable its reopening. It was then agreed between the parties that REFER will fully support the works that prove necessary in the uneven passage in order to guarantee the safety and mobility with comfort of the citizens, and for this purpose the Municipality must present a project proposal that meets the needs of the Olhanenses”, recalled the Chamber of Olhão.
The elected councilors are now waiting for a response, which is intended to be quick, from the municipal services, since any solution to be proposed to REFER will have to have «due prior hearing by the municipal decision-making body», in addition to being «the object of presentation and public discussion».
