Guadiana riverThe Junta de Andalucia, through the Public Agency of Ports of Andalusia, awarded this week the work to remove sand from Foz do Guadiana. The works have a deadline of three months, so this first phase is expected to be completed in January.

The contract now signed has a charge of 723 thousand euros and the work will be in charge of the Spanish company Sociedade Anónima de Trabalhos e Obras (SATO).

The intervention in Foz will recover a minimum draft of 3,5 meters, thus allowing the safe navigation of sports and fishing vessels.

The dredging of an area 1250 meters long and 60 meters wide is planned and it is estimated that, to achieve this objective, it will be necessary to remove around 55 cubic meters of sediment from the river bottom.

Thus, the first phase of the “Navegabilidad do Guadiana” project is completed, approved under the POCTEP, as announced by David Santos, president of the Coordination and Regional Development Commission of the Algarve and the Euroregion Alentejo-Algarve-Andalusia.

This procedure follows the memorandum of understanding on the removal of silting from the mouth of the Guadiana, signed in Lisbon, last March, between the Portuguese Government and the Junta de Andalucia.
