I Know Nadar_VRSA ProjectChildren from 1st cycle schools in Vila Real de Santo António will learn the basics of swimming under the project «1,2,3,4… I already know how to swim», which involves about 500 students from 26 classes in that municipality and arrives 'to the majority of educational establishments in the municipality'.

Classes take place, in a rotating system, in the municipal swimming pools of VRSA, from Monday to Friday, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, with each group being accompanied by a responsible teacher, two physical education teachers and educational assistants.

In 2014/15 there are more than double the number of students involved than last year when the initiative was launched. Small swimmers arrive from the Santo António, Caldeira Alexandre, António Aleixo and Monte Gordo.

«Learning is done at the pace of each child, with an initial assessment being carried out in the first class. In order to enable all schools to join the project, the municipality provides free transport between the swimming pools and educational establishments», revealed the Chamber of VRSA.

From March 2015, the activity will be extended to pre-school students (4 and 5 years old), «in order to provide the youngest children with the first experience in water».

«In addition to teaching students to swim correctly, reducing the risks associated with accidents occurring in the aquatic environment, the project also aims to promote healthier lifestyles and combat childhood obesity», concluded the municipality.
