1The Piaget Institute of Silves, in partnership with the company FisioRider, organized, on October 24th, in Praia da Rocha, the workshop “Physiotherapy applied to surfing and bodyboarding”, aimed at Physiotherapy students.

Physiotherapy applied to surfing and bodyboarding has as main objective to prevent the common injuries of these modalities, improving the athlete's physical performance.

The practice of these modalities requires specific movements, requiring the acquisition of different physical aspects, such as endurance, speed, strength, agility, flexibility and proprioceptiveness. Athletes in these modalities are subjected to several factors that can predispose to injuries.

2Since this area of rehabilitation is still not widespread, this workshop, at the Portimão Surf Club facilities, provided Physiotherapy students with contact with Physiotherapy exercises that can improve the performance of athletes.

Students observed the performance of proprioceptive and plyometric training on unstable surfaces applied to athletes, under the supervision of physiotherapist Filipe Costa, from the company FisioRider (Portimão).

Proprioceptive and plyometric training allows individuals to establish relationships with their surroundings, providing information about the position of the joint segments of their movement pattern, being an important factor in gestural correction, dynamic stability and injury prevention.

5Students practiced these specific exercises applied to surfing and bodyboarding, in addition to taking a surf lesson, under the supervision of the monitor Luís Correia, so that they could be aware of the need to work on unstable surfaces.
