Praia Nova, next to the Nossa Senhora da Rocha promontory, on the coast of Lagoa, is the first of a group of six beaches to be subjected to an artificial sand replenishment operation.

Around two million euros will be invested in this beach to increase the width of the sand to 40 meters and also increase its height, in order to protect the cliffs.

Intervention in Praia Nova started on the 28th of August and will last for three weeks, followed by beaches of Cova Redonda (Lagoa), in the third and fourth weeks of September, Coelha (first and second week of October) and Castelo (third week of October), both on the coast of Albufeira, Benagil (last week of October ) and finally Carvoeiro, in the first fifteen days of November. Work is done day and night.

At Praia Nova, one of the diversions of the few bathers who dare to withstand the noise of the dredger pumping sand onto the sand is to catch the shells that arrive with the new sand, dredged from an area off Albufeira, five kilometers from coast.

In the water, there is a patch of suspended sand, which makes it unappetizing, but which does not pose any danger to the health of bathers.

In the last fifteen days of September, sand replacement will continue on the neighboring beach of Cova Redonda, next to the luxury tourist developments of Vila Lara and Vila Vita. The works are under the responsibility of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).
