Barnacles«The territory of Vila do Bispo lives a lot from tourism and activities related to the sea, but the Vila lives essentially from gastronomic tourism», of the people who travel there to taste the snacks, namely those that are «of the best barnacles in the world» .

This is what he says is Adelino Soares, mayor of Vila do Bispo, on the purpose of another edition of the Perceve Festival, the third, which will take place from September 12th to 14th, at the Pavilhão da Escola EB 2,3 de S .Vincent.

Organized by the Association of Seafood Collectors of Vila do Bispo and Costa Vicentina, with the support of the City Council, this initiative aims to promote one of the greatest gastronomic delicacies in the municipality, the barnacle.

«We are committed to promoting this excellent product, in particular by supporting the application for certification of the barnacle, promoted by the Association of Shellfish Collectors. It will be a way of certifying a product as being part of the Natura Park and thus also achieving its economic value”, added the mayor, in an interview with Sul Informação.

But, also said Adelino Soares, in addition to the aspect of «promoting an economic and tourist activity», «the municipality has also supported a scientific research project» by a young Vila-Biologist biologist, who, incidentally, is at the base of the process of certification.

poster«In addition to promoting tourism, we want to have a scientific, rigorous basis, so that we can speak and promote the barnacle of Vila do Bispo», stressed the mayor.

Known for offering quality seafood, the Perceve Festival, as in previous years, will offer visitors some of the best gastronomic delicacies that the municipality has, including barnacles, limpets, burgaus, mussels, fried moray eels, razor clams, xerém porridge, fried cuttlefish, among other snacks.

In these three days of celebration, in addition to the delicacies of Vila-bispense cuisine, the Festival will also feature a lot of musical entertainment, so on the 12th the artists Xico Barata and João Paulo Cavaco will be present, on the 13th, the groups Too Hot 2Handle and Al -Buhera and on the 14th the group The Jazztrix 4 Tet and Zé do Pipo.

Also during this event, on the 13th, between 16 pm and 00, a Zumba class will be held. On the 1800th, between 14:18 and 00:20, there will be an action to promote mackerel, which will include tastings and cooking demonstrations.

This event of the project Cavala Algarvia of the CCMAR of the University of Algarve will be coordinated by the School of Hotel and Tourism of the Algarve.

Barnacles are abundant on the Costa Vicentina, but not always easy to catch, due to the hard to reach places where they are found. Shellfish gatherers descend the cliffs to catch them, which is extremely dangerous given the slope of the cliffs.

Sometimes their life depends on the companion who stays on top, next to the safety rope, to catch barnacles from the rocks, thus exposing their lives to constant danger. It is considered one of the safest seafood, in terms of quality and conservation.

The barnacles (pollicipes pollicipes), from the crustacean family, are a seafood of great importance in the local economy and gastronomy. Many shellfish gatherers are dedicated to the professional harvesting and marketing of this shellfish.

As an ancestral activity of enormous importance, it is necessary to preserve and look for sustainable ways to maintain a natural resource on which many families in the municipality depend.
