ecopointThe contest «Let's give life to waste» once again encourages selective separation, aka recycling, in schools in the Algarve, in the 2014/15 school year. The company Algar, with the support of Sociedade Ponto Verde, launched the 3rd edition of this competition, aimed at all elementary and secondary schools in the Algarve.

The school that collects and puts the greatest amount of waste in the ecopoints will be the winner of this competition, whose prize is “a state-of-the-art computer”.

In addition, there is a prize for everyone and for the planet, as the amount of waste that is sent for recycling in this way is large. Last school year, it was possible to collect around 25 tons of recyclable/reusable products.

The organization hopes that these numbers will be surpassed, in the 3rd edition of the competition, and that «the selective separation of waste in schools becomes a spontaneous and natural act, as only in this way will it be possible to provide a clean environment for the school community».

«The competition promotes the development of a set of activities that aim to help the school community to correctly manage the waste it produces. Conditions will be created so that the school can improve its process of selective separation/deposition of recyclable waste, namely through the provision of equipment (bags and household recycling bins)», according to Algar.

The school must create a plan and form a «Recycling Brigade», «whose mission is to verify that the final destination of school waste is suitable for its recovery/treatment».

There is also a bet on the interaction of schools with the surrounding community. Students should encourage the population to contribute to their cause, placing recyclable waste in recycling bins located next to schools. The more waste deposited, the better the position of schools in the monthly ranking.

ALGAR and SPV offer support for the preparation of the waste management plan, through training to the “Brigada da Reciclagem” and the provision of signage. ALGAR will also deliver containers for the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and batteries for batteries and accumulators. In addition, schools participating in the competition will have guaranteed recycling points near their premises.
