EB2,3 School of FerreirasAlbufeira City Council is going to start this August the works to remove the fiber cement covering containing asbestos at the EB 2,3 school in Ferreiras.

This type of intervention has been considered a priority by the municipality, which prides itself on «not having any school built under its responsibility containing this product».

The contract covers an area of 2073,25 square meters of roofs and will cost around 92.500 euros.

The first intervention in the county took place precisely in this school, in 2010 (1st phase), and the works continued in 2011 (2nd phase).

With the completion of the project, which is about to begin, the work of removing the fiber cement covering containing asbestos at the EB 2,3 in Ferreiras has been completed.

Also in 2010, work was carried out to remove this type of roof at the EB1 in Olhos de Água and the EB 2,3 Martim Fernandes.

Despite stressing that there is no “consensual information regarding the consequences for public health due to the use of this type of material”, the Municipal Council of Albufeira has chosen to remove all asbestos-containing fiber cement roofs, with schools built by municipality no longer have any material that uses this product in its composition.

The next interventions will cover the following schools: EB 2,3 Martim Fernandes, EB2,3 Diamantina Negrão, EB2,3 Francisco Cabrita and EB 2,3 de Paderne.

So far, the Albufeira municipality has invested more than 170 euros – including tests to assess airborne asbestos particles and works to remove the roofs.

It is expected that the overall investment, considering the interventions still to be carried out, will come to around 500 thousand euros.
