AMAL Intermunicipal Council MeetingThe presidents of the Algarve Chambers invited Health Minister Paulo Macedo to travel to AMAL – Algarve Intermunicipal Community «as a matter of urgency», to talk about the problems that have affected this sector. The mayors no longer believe that "there are solutions that can come from those responsible for the health of the region" and want the government to intervene.

The decision was taken this Monday, at a meeting of the Intermunicipal Council of AMAL, which brings together the presidents of the 16 Algarve municipalities. The topics under discussion will be “the failures that have been verified in the Basic Emergency Services, but also the lack of doctors and nurses”.

In statements to the Sul Informação, the president of that entity Jorge Botelho explained that the objective of this meeting «is to debate the issues that affect the region in the health sector», which reached «an unsustainable level» and also «the search for solutions».

"We want to move to a claim phase, but without losing sight of dialogue and the search for solutions," he reinforced. The mayors will not only wait for what the minister can bring, but will present themselves "some proposals".

«Something that we are going to convey is that the competitions must be opened taking into account the specificities of the Algarve. And it's not just about doctors. At the level of health assistants there are also glaring shortages of personnel», he said.

As for possible resignations, such as the one made by the mayors last March, in a meeting with the tutelage, in relation to the still president of Centro Hospitalar do Algarve Pedro Nunes, they should not be on the table. "What is lacking for us is the National Health System itself", considered Jorge Botelho
