A world record and seven nationals beaten at the ANDDI Summer National Championships in Mexilhoeira Grande

A female junior Down Syndrome world record, achieved by swimmer Diana Torres, from Leixões, and seven new national records were the result of the 2014 ANDDI National Summer Championship for swimmers with intellectual disabilities, which was disputed over the weekend, in the swimming pool of the Mexilhoeira Grande Sports Complex (Portimão).

The swimmers from O2-Portimão, the club that organized the event, obtained five Gold and two Bronze medals.

Thus, Filipe Santos was gold in the 50 meters Freestyle, 50, 100 and 200 Mariposa, while Levi Nascimento was gold in the 100 meters Costas and bronze in the 50 and 100 Bruços.

In the National Championship participated 18 clubs and institutions from all over the country, which were represented by a hundred swimmers. All participants received a free t-shirt and beach slippers, as well as massages offered by Forma & Animus to athletes from all clubs.

The competition was also the stage for a synchronized swimming demonstration by Associação Desportiva Manuel Teixeira Gomes. The meals took place in a very welcoming environment, at the EB 2,3 school in Mexilhoeira Grande.

At the closing lunch, congratulations were also sung to the swimmer from Portimão Filipe Santos, who turned 26 on Sunday. A moment of great emotion that left none of the 150 participants indifferent.

This National Summer Championship was organized by the association O2–Portimão and ANDDI – National Association of Sports for Intellectual Disabilities.

The National Championship had the support of the Portimão City Council in the provision of the swimming pool, the Bemposta Schools Group regarding meals at the Mexilhoeira Grande School EB 2,3, of Analgarve (Algarve Swimming Association) regarding arbitration , and Youth Hostels, at the level of accommodation for all athletes and coaches.
