Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE HOT) announced that the Sheraton Algarve Hotel at Pine Cliffs Resort will begin gradual renovation work, encompassing all guest rooms, public areas, restaurants and bars.

In addition, an extension to the property is also included, which includes a further 78 new luxury suites, a new Italian restaurant, a signature spa and underground parking.

The renewal is an integral part of the new agreement between United Investments (Portugal) and the hotel's global operator, Starwood Hotels & Resorts. The agreement comprises the extension of the existing management contract with Starwood, for a period of 20 years, this international group continuing to operate the property under the Luxury Collection brand.

The Luxury Collection consists of a selection of over 85 of the most recognized hotels and resorts around the world. Other flagship properties of the Luxury Collection include the recently renovated Hotel Gritti Palace in Venice, as well as the mythical Hotel Alfonso XIII in Seville and the Hotel Maria Cristina in San Sebastian.

The renovation of the Sheraton Algarve Hotel is part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts' global strategy for the restoration of the finest and most celebrated Luxury Collection hotels in Europe. Other recently renovated properties are the well-known and prestigious Hotel Prince de Galles in Paris, the Hotel Bristol in Vienna and the Hotel Gritti Palace in Venice, among others.

The renovation of the Sheraton Algarve will be carried out in different phases, starting in November 2014, during the winter season. The first phase will be completed before the hotel opens for the spring/summer 2015 season.

The second phase will take place during the winter period of 2015 and the third and final phase will be carried out during the winter of 2016. The project will be completed in the spring of 2017, in time for the hotel's 25th anniversary celebrations.

Even Frydenberg, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Western Europe commented: “The renovation of this prestigious facility will ensure that Pine Cliffs Resort continues to be considered one of the best resorts in Europe for many, many years to come. The signing of the renewal of the existing management contract between United Investments (Portugal) and Starwood Hotels & Resorts is a good illustration of Starwood's commitment to the Algarve market and we are committed to continuing this long and fruitful relationship with our business partner , the UIP'.

New project maintains "indigenous elements" of the hotel

Originally built in 1992 by United Investments (Portugal), the Sheraton Algarve Hotel, with its architectural features of Arab influence, provides its guests, according to Starwood, «a truly indigenous experience».

The traditional towers and wooden elements ingeniously combined with the traditional hand-painted Portuguese tiles ensure the property's strong connection with the art, history and valuable cultural heritage of the Algarve.

The new design will retain the 'indigenous elements' of the building, yet offer a contemporary-style interior environment and all the services today's global travelers expect.

Talal Al-Bahar, president of United Investments (Portugal), stresses that “this is a significant investment by United Investments (Portugal) and it reaffirms our intention to continue investing in Portugal and the Algarve. Pine Cliffs is a unique Resort and one of the iconic properties in our investment portfolio. This expansion and renovation of the property will keep us at the forefront of Portugal's leisure industry and as one of the world's finest leading luxury resorts. We will maintain our solid and ongoing long-term relationship with Starwood Hotels & Resorts, in this magnificent country and in the attractive Algarve region».
