The contract for the Rehabilitation of the Walls and the Execution of Scenic Lighting at the Sagres Fortress was signed last week. The intervention will cost around 635 euros and should be completed by the end of the year.

The present intervention consists of restoring the conservation conditions of the different elements that make up the Fortaleza, «reversing the tendency of degradation of recent years and restoring its external image», announced this Monday the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, which started , in 2009, the Sagres Promontory Requalification and Enhancement Program.

The main objective of the work is «the rehabilitation of the wall coverings, the conservation of the façade portal and the sundial, the rehabilitation of the exterior and interior coverings of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça, the conservation of the cannons, the replacement of the cannon support cars, the rehabilitation of the pavement in the battery areas and the scenic lighting of the monument'.

As revealed to Sul Informação, in November 2013, the then Regional Director of Culture of the Algarve Dália Paulo, on the occasion of the beginning of the works inside the Auditorium of the Fortaleza de Sagres, after that intervention, 80% of the works of the 1st Phase would be concluded. The work consigned to May 26 will make it possible to complete the remaining 20 percent.

The same responsible revealed, at the time, that the 2nd phase should take place from "January 2014 to June 2015", that is, over a year and a half, following an application for European Funds, presented in July of that year by the DR of Culture of the Algarve, already approved.

It is in this 2nd phase that the contract – work and museography – of the Exhibit Center of the Sagres Fortress is planned, to be installed in part of the buildings built in the 90s, designed by the architect João Carreira.

Also in this case, the works will cost around 4 million euros, the bulk of which will come from the European Union, through the PO Algarve 21 and also with funds from the National Strategic Reference Framework (QREN) between 2007 and 2013.

«The attractiveness of the Sagres Fortress, a National Monument classified in 1910, is associated with the unique combination of a multiplicity of values that give it a unique character, far surpassing the various functions that have been attributed to it over the centuries». describes the entity responsible for the work. It is, moreover, one of the most visited monuments in Portugal.

The Requalification and Enhancement of the Sagres Promontory, as part of a fund intervention that aims to take advantage of the multiple potential of the complex, had an investment in the 1st phase of almost 4 million euros and had the financial support of the Intervention Program program of the Turismo (PIT), from Turismo de Portugal and from the PIPITAL and QREN, from POAlgarve 21.
