The Lagoa Council decided to suspend the collection of the waste disposal fee at the Waste Disposal Center – Espaço Cerca da Lapa, next to Fatacil, on an experimental basis, in the period between June 2 and December 31, to try to end the clandestine dumps.

With a view to «eradicating the growing and continued proliferation of small clumps of greens, monsters and debris in the municipality of Lagoa», the Chamber claims to be taking «a first but important step in reducing the visual, environmental and public health impact that that situation in the county».

Thus, "moving from words to deeds, to help and serve small waste producers", the municipality decided that they could deposit their greens, debris, monsters, REE, paper and cardboard, at the Waste Disposal Center - Espaço Cerca da Lapa, every day between 8:30 am and 12:00 pm and between 13:30 pm and 17:00 pm.

The municipality adds that the measure now disclosed will also involve "strengthening inspection actions in this matter", and therefore asks for "the understanding of the entire population that, in the face of any non-compliance, could jeopardize the credibility of Lagoa, as holiday destination, but not only».

The Council of Lagoa considers that «the agglomeration, dispersion and abandonment of waste of all kinds contributes seriously to the contamination of the environment, in addition to the terrible image of neglect and degradation that it transmits, not only to our population but, above all, to the people who, coming from all over the world, visit us and have their second homes here, namely holiday homes and who, directly or indirectly, contribute to the stabilization of our economy and the per capita income of the population».

On the other hand, "the indiscriminate abandonment of residues – whatever they were – has a direct impact on public health through contagion through invisible molecules, but present and which can be responsible for different types of infestations, pests and diseases".

«Because tourism is the population's main means of survival, the Lagoa City Council, attentive to the quality of life and preservation of the environment in its municipality, decided to take a position that encourages “greater care in disposal” from now on, appealing to the civic sense of its residents, whether on the coast or inland».

Lagoa strengthens garbage collection and bets on environmental education

Last week, the Municipality of Lagoa had also announced that it has invested in a plan to strengthen the collection of urban waste for the summer season, with a view to reducing the impact on the disposal of urban waste that usually takes place in that period.

In this plan, in addition to the acquisition of a new waste collection vehicle which cost 185.000 euros, the increase in the frequency of collection of containers will also be advanced.

Therefore, from June 1st to June 30th, the collection will be made from Monday to Friday, from 5:00 am to 12:00 pm, and on Saturday from 5:00 am to 11:00 am.

From the 1st of July until the 14th of September, there will be uninterrupted pick-up, including Sundays, from 5:00 to 12:00.

The Chamber adds that this extension will imply the carrying out of 2.787 overtime hours by workers assigned to this service, corresponding to an additional cost of approximately 12.700 euros.

Environmental awareness will also be reinforced. With this measure, the Municipality of Lagoa intends to raise the issue of waste to the public in order to raise awareness among Lagoa residents of the importance of good environmental practices.

This measure also includes door-to-door awareness-raising actions with merchants, involving Algar as responsible for collecting recycled material.

On the other hand, the inspection will be reinforced, in order to “guarantee compliance with the rules and recommendations resulting from these same campaigns, with actions outside the usual working period being planned”.

The municipality of Lagoa will also reinforce selective collection, recalling that a significant part of the lack of timely collection concerns glass, paper packaging and cardboard, the responsibility of which is the exclusive responsibility of Algar.

In this sense, the Algar company has committed to strengthening its human resources and equipment, in order to provide a more effective response to the increased production of recyclable waste that is also occurring at this time, improving the cleanliness of the recycling bins and the surroundings of the themselves, avoiding the deposition of these residues on the outside of these equipments.

Finally, traffic signs will be improved and reinforced at Ecopoints, as it is not always possible to carry out collection “due to the proliferation of parking lots in front of containers”. For this reason, vertical signage was placed, “in order to allow the police authorities to intervene more effectively with the offenders”.

With these measures, the municipality of Lagoa intends to «provide a better quality service in line with the requirements of a municipality dedicated to tourism».
