VRSA establishes innovative partnerships with Mexican municipalities in the areas of health, development and tourism

Luís Gomes, Mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, this week, in Mexico, implemented several protocols of collaboration in the social, health, education and technological development areas.

The initiatives are part of a working visit by the president of the municipality of Vila Real and various national entrepreneurs and investors to the Mexican states of Yucatán and Quintana Roo and to the municipalities of Cancún, Merida, Valladolid and Progresso.

During this visit, which will last until the 11th of May, an agreement of intentions has already been signed between the pharmaceutical group Telhabel and several local investors for the supply of medical and pharmaceutical products, and contacts have been established for future investment opportunities.

In Mérida – capital of the State of Yucatán – the Portuguese delegation was received by the local mayor, Renán Barrera, and various cultural partnerships between VRSA and the host city were studied.

In the portfolio there is even the possibility that the Pombaline city will establish twinning protocols with the Mexican municipalities of Mérida and Progresso, taking into account the common characteristics in terms of the historical and architectural heritage of the historic centers of these cities.

On the occasion, Luís Gomes, also president of the Iberoamerican Network of Medium Cities, made known the potential of the vast historical heritage of VRSA and listed the multiple partnerships that have been carried out with several Latin countries, namely with Cuba.

In Mérida, contacts were also established with the social development department and innovative projects already implemented in the social area were presented, with the aim of creating synergies in the areas of development and cooperation.

Also this week, the president of the municipality of Vila Real visited the port of Manzanillo, one of the most important in Latin America in container movement, and got to know various equipment in the areas of biotechnology, information technology, logistics, health and energy.

Meetings were also held with the Secretary for Economic Development, exchanged experiences in the nautical and technological areas and shared strategies in terms of urban requalification, conservation and territorial planning.

In this context, Pedro Alves, administrator of the municipal company SGU, presented the set of interventions by the municipality in the historic center of VRSA, and the possibility of exporting this know-how to cities like Valladolid and Mérida.

The work visit schedule also includes a tour of meetings in the tourist area of ​​Cancun – State of Quintana Roo – where meetings are scheduled with the mayor of that important tourist area, as well as with the secretary of local tourism.

At these meetings, the strategic investment areas in the Algarve in general and in Vila Real de Santo António in particular are being presented.
