More than two tons of hashish were seized yesterday, May 11, in a tourist village near Santa Luzia, and seven alleged traffickers were arrested, in an operation by the Territorial Detachment of the National Republican Guard of Tavira.

In all, the GNR seized 2044 kilos of hashish and detained seven men, between the ages of 21 and 48, and identified two others.

According to the GNR, "at the beginning of the night, the alert to the presence of several unknown individuals near a tourist village near Santa Luzia aroused the attention of the patrol of occurrences." After approaching and identifying one of these men, the patrol located three more nearby, who "also did not present a plausible reason for meeting there", so the GNR agents considered "their posture and behavior suspicious".

The authorities found that the men had been "contacted to transport items from boats ashore", although they said they did not know what it was.

Part of the detainees were "wet up to their knees" and one of them had a boat key in his possession, further increasing the suspicions of the GNR patrol.

They were then located in the Ria Formosa, next to Santa Luzia, "two vessels presumably involved in this illicit action." Searches in its interior made it possible to apprehend around forty bales of narcotic product inside each boat, which were hidden in compartments, totaling 2044 kilos of hashish.

The GNR military also detained three others involved in the case, who were caught trying to meet the four initial suspects.

The GNR also seized the two fiber vessels, about seven meters long, with a cabin and engines of 225hp and 150hp, a light passenger vehicle and seven mobile phones.

Two other individuals were also identified and a light goods vehicle seized, which the authorities suspect was destined to transport the drugs.
