Faro and Tangier rethink ferry connection between the two cities

Faro and Tangier had, in the 90s, an experience of maritime connection via ferry, “which was lost in the misunderstanding of many and in a less favorable situation”. Now the authorities of the two cities consider that "this connection can make perfect sense for the transport of passengers and goods".

This was one of the topics covered during the visit that a delegation of the City Council of Faro made, between the 10th and 13th of May, to the city of Tangier, in Morocco, in contacts with various local authorities and representatives of the business community.

"Today, with the emergence of significant forces of attraction of tourists and commercial flows, originating on both sides of the Sea, both parties think that this connection [by ferry] can make perfect sense for the transport of passengers and goods", stresses the camera of Faro.

On their way to celebrate 30 years since the signing of the Twinning agreement, the cities of Faro and Tangier prepare a new impetus in this cooperation.

The delegation from Faro, led by Vice President Paulo Santos, was able to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation that unite Faro to the capital city of the Region of Tangier and Tétouan since June 1985.

In a meeting with the President of the Municipality of Tangier, Fouad El Omari, which took place at the Local Chamber on the 12th, several priority matters in the consolidation of this cooperation were discussed, such as tourism promotion, the domain of environmental protection policies, mutual assistance between establishments of specialized education and training, the organization of business missions and the approximation between both universities, especially in the domains of the Sea.

In terms of culture, since the signing of the twinning, there have been several initiatives and institutional visits and a meeting of cultures, through various trips by ethnographic, artistic and cultural groups from both countries.

The Municipality of Faro he expressed to the Mayor of Tangier his willingness to rehabilitate this dynamic, framing it in a concerted strategy. For Faro this is, after all, the will of the public.

Well expressed, in fact, in the success of thematic events such as the Arabian Days, whose second edition starts in June in Vila-Adentro de Faro.

Likewise, Tangier and Faro are already preparing the establishment of joint initiatives in the areas of sport.
