The Vila Real de Santo António City Council is going to launch a biennial national competition, called «National Prize for Historical Essay António Rosa Mendes», with the purpose of continuously promoting research and literature on history in our country. parents.
The competition, which takes into account the important historical, academic and cultural legacy of António Rosa Mendes, deceased last year, will be presented on May 21 (Wednesday) at the University of Algarve, at the Teresa Júdice Gamito Amphitheater, from 14:30 pm, and is included in the Algarvian Academy tribute program the year in which the XNUMXth anniversary of Rosa Mendes' birth was celebrated.
The day also includes a solemn session attributing the name of António Rosa Mendes to the Library of the University of Algarve.
In this context, the VRSA municipality will also publish two literary works on the life and work of António Rosa Mendes: a first called «Subsidies for the Monograph of António Rosa Mendes» and a second called «Biography of António Rosa Mendes».
The initiative will count on the contribution of the village-realense Neto Gomes and the writer Carlos Campaniço, who joined this tribute project.
Also on the 13th of May, a municipal holiday, the Chamber of VRSA attributed the name of Professor António Rosa Mendes to the Municipal Historical Archive.
The ceremony is part of the municipality's homage program to Rosa Mendes, which aims to highlight Man and his Work, in order to perpetuate his example in our Municipality and in the Region.
For Luís Gomes, Mayor of VRSA, «the tribute program honors the name and work of Rosa Mendes and dignifies her experience as an intellectual, a good man and a man of culture».
Born in VRSA, António Rosa Mendes was an emeritus professor, respected and admired by students and colleagues and by the entire community of his relations, having contributed to boost scientific research on the History of the Algarve.
During his life, he was publicly recognized as a man of integrity, cultured, humanist, detached, humble, with character, principles and civic courage, having his roots in the Algarve marked all his academic, civic, social and political intervention.
