University honors the late professor António Rosa Mendes

The Algarve historian and university professor António Rosa Mendes, who died on June 3, 2013, will be posthumously honored by the University of the Algarve (UAlg) next Wednesday, May 21, the day he would celebrate his 60th birthday. The initiative is scheduled for 14:30 pm, at Teresa Júdice Gamito auditorium, on UAlg's Gambelas Campus.

An event that, according to UAlg, intends to “honor the man and his work, who have contributed so much to the development of knowledge and a critical spirit, promoting values ​​such as individual freedom and the fight against intolerance, both in academia and in society".

The program includes a conference on «The scientific and cultural production of António Rosa Mendes», which will have as speakers the retired full professor at the University of Coimbra Joaquim Romero de Magalhães, the full professor at the New University of Lisbon José Esteves Pereira, the full professor Emeritus of the University of Algarve José Eduardo Horta Correia and Full Professor of the University of Algarve Pedro Ferré.

At the end of the conference, the national award for historical essay “António Rosa Mendes” will be launched, awarded by the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António.

At 17:30 pm there will be a solemn session attributing the name “António Rosa Mendes” to the Library of the University of Algarve, which will host the Professor's private library. The ceremonies end with the inauguration of the exhibition «António Rosa Mendes: the Man and the Work», which will be open to the public until 31 May.

The University of Algarve invites the entire academic and non-academic community to participate in these ceremonies, which will be chaired by the dean of UAlg António Branco.
