Municipalities that have their accounts up to date may see the restrictions imposed by the Government reduced, as of 2015.

The Government, within the scope of next year's State Budget, is considering the creation of «pilot councils for this positive discrimination», which could see, for example, alleviated restrictions on hiring, revealed the mayor of São Brás de Alportel, Victor Guerreiro.

This restriction on hiring personnel is a measure that, in the view of the São Brasense mayor, harms the compliant municipalities, which, despite having the need for new staff and financial health to support them, cannot guarantee them.

"Two weeks after being elected mayor, I had a meeting with the Secretary of State for Local Administration, where I explained this situation to him and asked for positive discrimination," he said.

At this meeting, Vítor Guerreiro made known “the financial situation of the municipality, the needs we have and the needs of the population to get jobs. The secretary of State was very sensitized and was able to equate some pilot councils for this positive discrimination, for the 2015 State Budget», he said.

“There are some situations and limitations that we have difficulty in understanding, namely with regard to hiring staff and the increase in expenses with employees. We need employees in vital areas such as waste collection or water, as some are retiring, but we are unable to hire them. On the other hand, the population needs jobs. And, since we are able to pay the salaries, why is it not possible?”, framed the São Brasense mayor.

A revelation made during the interview that Vítor Guerreiro gave to Sul Informação and to Rádio Universitária do Algarve RUA FM (102.7 FM), as guest of the radio program Impressões. The program originally aired last night and can be heard again in its entirety on Saturday at 12 noon.

In this conversation, in which he took stock of the first months of his mandate and looked into the future, the mayor focused on current issues in São Brás de Alportel, but also in the region.

The centenary of the elevation of São Brás de Alportel to county, whose commemorations begin on Sunday and will last a year, was one of the topics discussed, but also the closing of services in the interior of the region, such as Finance and schools, a struggle that São Brás and many other Algarve municipalities have been slowing down.

Also on the table were the council's commitment to tourism and the executive's strategy for the future, "which goes beyond the four years of this mandate." Topics to follow in new articles, in the coming days, here on Sul Informação.
