A round-winged eagle (Buteo Buteo) was collected late yesterday afternoon in the Benagil area (Lagoa) by soldiers from the Environmental Protection Nucleus of the National Republican Guard of Silves.

The bird of prey, which was found by a person and showed signs of having been in captivity, was taken today by the SEPNA military to the RIAS, Wildlife Research and Recovery Center, in Olhão.

The round-winged eagle is one of the most abundant birds of prey in the national territory, and can be found in any region of the country, presenting as characteristics its compact structure, wide wings, wide and short neck and medium-sized tail.

The bird will now remain at the RIAS, «until the conditions are created to be returned to its natural habitat», adds the GNR, in a press release.
