The mural commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 25th of April, painted by many hands by artist Hugo Lucas and students from schools in the municipality, is now ready and will be officially inaugurated this Thursday night, April 24th, at 21:50 pm, in Lagoon.

Red carnations, blue pencils of censorship, people with flags in hand and shouting Freedom! at the top of his lungs, clenched fists tearing down walls. All these images are on the mural painted on a wall in Largo do Município, in front of the old building of the Paços do Concelho de Lagoa.

The final idea of the panel, called «25/40 – 25/80», was authored by Hugo Lucas, but as he explained to the Sul Informação, «was based on the drawings of students from schools in Lagoa».

And it was some of those students who were, all day yesterday, painting the mural, with such enthusiasm that the task, which Hugo Lucas thought could be extended to today, was completed on Wednesday. «Students from the Secondary School of Lagoa, the International School and the Estômbar School were here, all very committed and enthusiastic about the work», guaranteed the artist. «In the morning I even had to curb the enthusiasm of the students who were here, to leave work for those who came in the afternoon».

This Thursday morning, Hugo was alone putting some final "touches" on the mural, from spray of ink in hand. «When I started to draw on the white wall, a lady came by and complained that I was dirtying such a white wall. But you've already come back here and came to congratulate you, because you liked the mural», said the artist, with a smile.

Hugo Lucas, 37, was born in Ferreira do Alentejo, where, in 1996, he painted one of his first murals – “I went there to take a look a few days ago and it's still there!” – is considered one of the most outstanding muralists of his generation.

In addition to his work in Lagoa – where his lines are clearly visible, for example, on people's faces -, Hugo Lucas was one of the five artists invited by Lisbon Chamber to "reinterpret with their look, their style, their speech" the murals of 40 years ago. However, in the capital, it was not on the walls that the artists left their mark. It was in garbage trucks.

The idea of inviting Hugo Lucas to this work in the Algarve city came from the Municipal Committee for the 40th Anniversary of the 25th of April in Lagoa, which organizes, together with local authorities and communities, the festivities throughout the municipality.

José Águas da Cruz, president of the Municipal Assembly of Lagoa, explained to Sul Informação who already knew the artist's work done at the invitation of the Lisbon City Council, having considered it a good idea to invite him to this unprecedented intervention in the Algarve city.

After the official inauguration of the mural, scheduled for 21:50 pm, the stage set up in Largo do Município receives the show «Abril por Cá», by the associations of the municipality of Lagoa. At midnight (or 00:00 on the 25th), there will be the raising of the flag and the sharing of the cake for the 40th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.
