The campaign "Let's Record this Idea", for the collection and forwarding for recycling of used CD/DVD, no longer useful, produced in the domestic sector, ie in the home of the citizen, will be launched tomorrow, April 29, with the signing of a protocol between several entities at the Secretary of State for the Environment, in Lisbon.

Quercus was the entity that suggested the project in collaboration with the company Chronopost, having received the support of the Secretary of State for the Environment and the Portuguese Environment Agency and the involvement of several entities.

CDs and DVDs are made of polycarbonate (thermoplastic polymer), having an aluminum layer from 55 to 70 microns and a varnish layer with a print of about 20 microns. The plastic in question – polycarbonate – is 100% recyclable, however the problem lies in the difficulty of collecting it, mainly because the production of this type of waste is very dispersed and modest per inhabitant.

However, this campaign gained viability when a postal/parcel transport company – Chronopost – offered to set up, free of charge, a “capillary” collection, that is, a network that would allow the collection of this waste throughout mainland Portugal (in the future a solution can also be studied at the level of the Autonomous Regions).

Chronopost's condition for setting up this network is that the revenues generated from the sale of used CD/DVDs are channeled to the planting of trees through Fundação Floresta Unida (already a partner of Chronopost).

The campaign "Let's Record this Idea" had the precious collaboration of the APA – Portuguese Environment Agency, which named the aforementioned campaign and prepared the base text for Decree No. 75/2014 published by the Secretary of State for Environments Paulo Lemos.

Initially, the campaign will start at around 400+ “Pick me!” points (http://www.chronopost.pt/pick-me) of Chronopost and will quickly be extended to other locations (commercial surfaces, waste management systems, etc.), namely due to the framework of the protocols that will be signed tomorrow, and which we take the opportunity to highlight, thanking the following entities that will also support the campaign: Amb3E, APED, Ecopilhas, EGF, EGSRA, ERP Portugal and SPV.

With the start of the campaign for the domestic/urban sector, collection will also begin at various public or private entities (at no cost), namely banks, insurance companies, offices, etc.

Quercus believes that the campaign «Let's Record this idea» will be «effectively present in the minds of all citizens and other entities that produce this type of waste».
