The photography exhibition «Jordânia», with black and white photos by Pedro Barros and texts by Álvaro Figueiredo, will be on display in the cloisters of Convento de S. José, in Lagoa, from April 17th to 19th, within the scope of the Mercado de Cultures… in the light of candles, which will take place during those days in the building and in the streets around it.

In addition to the exhibition that presents a personal vision of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, images from the journeys of photographer and archaeologist Pedro Barros in «Syria» and in «Egypt will also be projected on the whitewashed walls.

Pedro Barros, born in Lisbon in 1975, works as an Archaeologist at the National Center for Nautical and Underwater Archeology of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage (DGPC).

Since 1996, in addition to having illustrated some articles on Cultural Heritage in various magazines, it has had seven individual thematic exhibitions, including “Foz Côa – the silence of a valley” (exhibited between 1996-2002 in Portugal and Spain, produced by the Center of Archaeological Studies), “Ganhões” (2000-2002, Portugal, Spain and Italy, Fala Só Intercultural Association), “Algarve Doce” (2001-2004, Portugal, São Brás de Alportel Costume Museum), “Cortiça ” (2007-2012, Portugal, Costume Museum of São Brás de Alportel), “Syria” (2010-2013, Portugal, Loulé City Council), “Egypt” (2012-2013, Portugal, Loulé City Council) and “Jordan”(Portugal, Loulé City Council).

He also cooperated as a member of the jury and in 1999 was awarded the 1st Prize in the Digital Photography Contest “À Descoberta do Litoral de Lagos”.

Alvaro Figueiredo studied Archeology in London at the Institute of Archeology, University College London, where he specialized in Archeology of the Near and Ancient Middle East, and Arabic language at the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London.

He participates in several archaeological projects in the Middle East and Egypt, where his work stands out in the necropolises of the Predynastic site of Hierakonpolis (Kom el-Ahmar) in Upper Egypt, in the Azraq oasis and in the Roman-Byzantine site of Qasr Burqu, in Jordan.

In Portugal, he collaborates as a bio-archeologist for the company Era Arqueologia, and is one of the principal investigators of the “Lisbon Mummy Project”, radiological investigation of Egyptian mummies from the collection of the National Museum of Archeology in Lisbon, in collaboration with Imagens Médicas Integradas (IMI).

Visiting professor at various cultural and scientific institutions in the United Kingdom, Portugal and the USA, and with specific interests in the areas of Egyptology, the Roman Empire in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Iberian Peninsula, origins and development of Islam, and contemporary history of the world Arab, works and lives between the cities of London and Lisbon.
