Seven cities in the Algarve are joining Earth Hour this evening, an initiative of the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), whose idea is to draw attention to the importance of changing behavior in favor of sustainable development.

Earth Hour, which began in 2007, takes place on the last Saturday of March and encourages citizens to turn off the electricity for one hour, between 20:30 pm and 21:30 pm.

In all, 96 participating cities across the country are registered on the WWF Portugal website, but many more will participate, even though they have not officially registered.

Thus, in the Algarve, the registered cities are Lagoa, Olhão, Lagos, Loulé and Quarteira. But others have already announced their intention to join the initiative, such as Faro and Albufeira. In Alentejo, adhere, for example, Odemira, Grândola, Reguengos de Monsaraz.

And what will each of them do? In Lagos, the Municipality will turn off the lighting in some buildings and public places: Fontes da Barca and 8 Bicas, Fonte de São Gonçalo, ornamental fountains on Avenida dos Descobrimentos and the city center (behind the Old Town Hall), on the Rotunda da Rosa dos Ventos (Meia Praia), on the Rotunda da Caravela, on the façades of the Church of Santa Maria and the Forte Pau da Bandeira, as well as on the Muralhas, in the Jardim da Constitution and in the Anel Verde. Outside the urban area, the exterior lighting of the Moinho de Odiáxere and the Fountain of Largo do Poço, in Almádena, will be turned off.

Em Faro, the Municipality will turn off the lights at Arco da Vila between 20:30 pm and 21:30 pm this Saturday. In the capital of the Algarve, the “honor” of turning off the switch will fall to Chamber President Rogério Bacalhau.
