The works to repair the damage caused by the storms in January and February off the coast of Aljezur, in the amount of 280 thousand euros, will be taken over and paid by the Polis Litoral Sudoeste Society.

José Amarelinho, Mayor of Aljezur, stated in statements to the Sul Informação, your contentment for this decision. “It didn't make sense for the Polis Society to be requalifying the coast and then not taking over these works”, said the mayor.

Amarelinho added that the works will take place between the last fortnight of April and the first fortnight of June, so that everything is ready "for the bathing season".

"The heaviest jobs, requiring many hours of machinery, are clearing the mouths of the three streams – Bordeira, Odeceixe and Amoreira," added the mayor of Aljezur, adding that sand will also be recharged in the areas most affected by the storms. .

The City Council of Aljezur had asked, in January, the competent authorities, in particular the Ministry of Environment, that were the central administration to take over the works made urgent by the storms of the beginning of the year.

However, in response to this claim, the Board of Directors of Sociedade Polis Litoral Sudoeste informed the municipality that actions to repair damage to the coast in the Municipality of Aljezur, including all situations identified by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) in the area of intervention of the Polis Litoral Sudoeste, will be carried out within the scope of the Intervention for the Requalification and Enhancement of the Southwest Coast of Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, with their financing guaranteed.

The preparation of the elements for the launch of the tenders is already being agreed with the Municipality of Aljezur, the Administration of the Hydrographic Region of the Algarve/APA and the ICNF.

The works to be carried out include risk mitigation in the accesses to Pontal da Carrapateira and Praia da Bordeira, where support structures (walkways) will be adapted to the beach to extreme conditions of maritime agitation, to avoid repeated damage.

In the small ports of Arrifana and Oven, stone blocks displaced by the waves will be reconditioned, as well as repairing and strengthening the access ramps for the vessels, as well as cleaning the bays.

In the Arrifana port, the state of the jetty will also be evaluated, and an execution project will be carried out for the respective repair.

At Amoreira, Bordeira, Monte Clérigo and Arrifana beaches, it is planned to clear the mouths of the streams and recharge the sands.

In the case of Praia de Odeceixe, in addition to clearing the mouth of the stream and recharging the sand, palisades and dune regenerators will also be placed, in order to improve the defense against overtopping.

In addition to these interventions, there will also be occasional repairs to stairways and walkways in various areas and beaches.

The January and February storms on the west coast, in addition to having destroyed wooden walkways, accesses and bathing support structures, also caused damage to the fishing ports of Arrifana and Forno, as well as obstructing the mouth of the streams, leading to the flooding of the upstream floodplains.
