The Mayor of Aljezur is the new President of the Section of Municipalities with Protected Areas, of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities.

The Section Board also has the mayors of Castelo de Vide and Terras do Bouro, as vice-presidents, and the mayors of Peniche and Macedo de Cavaleiros as members.

The proposal was unanimously voted on at the first meeting of this Section on March 20, in Coimbra, and 80 municipalities are part of it.

Several issues were immediately discussed, and the section decided, among many other aspects, to prepare and present to the Government rigorous work at national level based on the characterization of these territories on what really matters and matters, as a basis for work for the future.

This work will address, among other topics: harmonization of concepts, territorial management instruments, reduction of conflicts and tensions around these areas, ways to ensure, address and deal transversally with the preservation of biodiversity and natural values present in a development perspective sustainable (society / environment / economy / culture), territorial exclusion, abandonment of traditional activities, interdisciplinary work, blocks, arbitrariness, qualification of people and territories, reinforcement of the identity of different communities, exclusion/inclusion of local populations, social participation, violation values and ancestral honor and wisdom.

As for the next Community Framework, the Section also expressed concern about the «possibility of the specificities of protected areas not being considered, a fact that, if registered, would constitute yet another added difficulty for these municipalities».

The Section considers that there is, therefore, «need to promote a positive discrimination in the contribution rates, increasing them, a concern that they intend to analyze and discuss in person with the Secretary of State for the Environment».
