The number of divorces in Portugal tripled in 20 years, from 1990 to 2010. The phenomenon has consequences on the family structure and on the development of children. Therefore, the International School of the Algarve decided to address the topic in its 5th Pedagogical Conference of the 2013-2014 school year and invited Bárbara Figueiredo, from the University of Minho, to the effect.

The session, entitled 'Divorce: A Family Transition?” is open to the public and will take place at the Salão Nobre of the Albufeira Town Hall, on the 28th of March, from 21 pm, with the support of the local authority.

With a PhD in Clinical Psychology, Bárbara Figueiredo is an associate professor with Aggregation at the School of Psychology at the University of Minho, where she has headed, since 1992, the Psychology Service's Children and Adolescents Unit.

He was responsible for several research projects and also for intervention projects at the Maternity Júlio Dinis (Porto) and at the Psychology Service of the University of Minho.

With more than two hundred scientific publications at national and international level, Bárbara Figueiredo has been dedicating herself specifically to research and intervention in the domain of the family, in particular in pregnancy and parenthood.

At the Psychology Research Center at the University of Minho, Bárbara Figueiredo coordinates the research group 'Family: Studies and Intervention'.

With recent studies on the issue of divorce, the speaker invited by the Escola Internacional do Algarve will share findings from her research and with that knowledge help parents and educators to better deal with the side effects of divorce on children.

Entrance is free and no seat reservation is required.

The speaker will be available to answer questions asked by the public.
