On April 16th, the first «Open Day» will be promoted, where anyone who wants can get to know the Barlavento Sanitary Landfill (Portimão municipality) and the Transfer Station of the Faro/Loulé/ Olhão (Loulé municipality). Starting next month, the initiative will be repeated monthly, always on the third Wednesday of the month.

On the "Open Day", there will be two guided tours per day, in each of these facilities, the first starting at 10:30 am and the next at 15:2. Estimated duration of each visit 10 hours. The visits will have a minimum number of 25 participants and a maximum limit of XNUMX, so prior registration will be required.

Anyone interested in getting to know firsthand the work done by the multi-municipal company responsible for the recovery and treatment of urban solid waste in the Algarve should register by email [email protected] or using the freephone 800 203 251.

«ALGAR privileges, in its communication and environmental awareness strategy, guided visits to all its waste treatment and recovery infrastructures (Landfills, Sorting and Composting Units), as well as the promotion of educational activities at the Environmental Education Center (CEA) in Albufeira or in the schools in the region», said the company, in a press release.

Algarve mayors also benefited from the «Open Day»

Presidents and councilors of the Algarve Councils, as well as directors of municipal services and municipal companies, visited the Transfer Station of Faro/Loulé/Olhão and the Algar Portimão Landfill last Monday. A measure of the multi-municipal company that aimed to “improve the quality of the service it provides to the population of the region”.

According to ALGAR, the visit had two distinct moments. The first consisted of the exhibition of a brief presentation video of ALGAR and the various services it offers to the population (selective collection of packaging waste, transfer of waste, composting of green waste, recovery of biogas in electricity, waste disposal and monitoring landfill and organic recovery) and also a guided tour of the operational part, namely the sorting unit.

The second moment consisted of a technical meeting to present some indicators related to the management of waste produced in the 16 municipalities. The action ended with an open debate in which the challenge was launched with all Municipalities, together with ALGAR, to analyze solutions to improve the conditions for collecting and sorting waste in the region, not only during periods of large population agglomeration, like the summer, but all year round.

"In unsorted waste there is a lot of recyclable material that is not being sent to the recycling bins and the local authorities are bearing this cost without needing to," said ALGAR, which now has a former mayor of the Algarve, Macário Correia, as administrator delegate.
