The Castro Marim City Council approved, at a meeting of the executive, the attribution of a subsidy of 49 thousand euros to the Factory of the Parish Church of Odeleite, for the conservation and restoration of the altarpieces of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Visitação.

The intervention to be carried out in that temple is the result of an application by the Parish Church Factory of Odeleite to the PRODER program, for the conservation and restoration of the altarpieces of the Igreja Matriz in Odeleite.

The works to be carried out cost 108.141,60 euros, and are scheduled to start in March.

They include the conservation and restoration of three of the Church's five altarpieces (altarpieces of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, São Miguel and São Pedro), «considered urgent due to the high degree of degradation», stresses the municipality.

The altarpieces present structural and aesthetic problems, namely, cracks and fissures in the wooden supports and insect infestation, detachment and opening of joints, significant loss of polychromy, with the whole of the pieces being so degraded that the works will involve the total disassembly of the parts, partial or, in some cases, total replacement of structural elements.

The Odeleite Parish Church Factory project is 60% financed by the PRODER Program (a total of 58.818,48 euros), and the Municipality is responsible for funding the investment not eligible for the application, which is 49.323,12 euros.

For the Castro Marim City Council, the work of conservation and restoration of the altars of the Igreja Matriz de Odeleite is “of great importance, especially since we are in the presence of the most relevant religious heritage in the municipality, according to historian Francisco Lameira, a specialist in the history of the art, being, at the same time, a solid investment in a village that has an enormous tourist and landscape potential that matters to be valued».
