The President of the Ordem dos Médicos meets today, at 17 pm, with the Integrated Masters in Medicine (MIM) of the University of Algarve, at the Amphitheater Verde (building 00), on the Campus de Gambelas, in Faro.

This meeting will be an opportunity for future UAlg physicians, 29 of whom are already holding the Common Year in hospitals, to hear the president José Manuel Silva explain the most recent proposals to change the Medical Internship Regulation and the proof of access to the specialty .

For Isabel Palmeirim, director of the MIM, "this visit will also serve to convey to the President the positive balance of the MIM, which is now in its fifth edition."

The UAlg MIM, very inspired by the training methods of reference countries in the medical field, such as Australia, United Kingdom and Canada, is a 4-year course, with 40 weeks each, and is designed to train doctors with a well-defined profile in three strands: Knowledge, Attitudes and Practical Skills.

The acquisition of knowledge of basic sciences and clinical sciences is based on real clinical problems (PBL) discussed/solved/analyzed in groups of 8 students, assisted by a tutor.

Self-learning is a cornerstone of this training system. Students are not “taught” but are helped to learn in a team environment that takes advantage of the synergies arising from the students' previous training.

Learning the basics of communication between patient and doctor, clinical ethics, learning the skills to take the clinical history, the patient's physical examination, diagnosis and therapeutic plan, are done in the context of General and Family Medicine in the first half of the course, and later, in the third and fourth year, in a hospital context.

The training is also complemented with anatomical and clinical simulation models designed for this purpose, available at UAlg, under the guidance of clinical experts.

The course also has seminars every week, where national and international experts from different clinical areas are invited.

This meeting is part of the visit that the Chairman of the Medical Association is doing, today and tomorrow, to the Algarve.
