Armin Bidarian Moniri, visiting professor of the Medicine Course at the University of Algarve and a specialist in Otorhinolaryngology at the Centro Hospitalar Algarvio (CHA), was awarded by Queen Silvia of Sweden, on the 22nd of January, at Stockholm Castle.

This distinction is due to his research work related to hearing loss in children, which culminated in the creation of a treatment for serous otitis media, thus reducing invasive surgeries in this anatomical region.

Hearing loss in children, the most frequent cause of which is serous ear infections (about 80% of children suffer one or more serous ear infections before the age of 4 years), is a common impairment that can linger for months to years before detected, resulting in thousands of operations per year in our country. In addition to the potential risks associated with anesthesia, children occasionally experience serious complications and many have to be re-operated. All these procedures entail high socio-economic costs.

In this context, Armin Bidarian Moniri has developed a new non-invasive method for the treatment of serous otitis, which consists of a device that, appearing to be a toy, helps the child to balance the pressure and aerate the middle ear, preventing the formation of serous otitis .

This new method was tested in the Otorhinolaryngology service at CHA – Portimão, with the collaboration of colleagues Ilídio Gonçalves (service director), Maria-João Ramos, Lourdes Moreno and Rubén Rojas.

With no side effects detected and with excellent adhesion, the method has been patented and will be marketed under the name Moniri-Otovent later this year.

Graduated in Medicine at the University of Bergen, Norway, at the age of 39, the awardee has already had a brilliant career, having performed clinical work in anesthesia and pediatric surgery at Karolinska University Hospital, in Stockholm, and a specialty of Otolaryngology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, in Gothenburg, where he began his doctorate in “Sleep Apnea in adults and seromucous otitis in children”, based on two new treatments he imagined.

The direction of the Medicine course of the University of Algarve is pleased with this recognition of the research work of one of its professors and emphasizes that “it is an honor to have in the team Doctors and Researchers with the profile of Doctor Armin Bidarian Moniri”, adding even though “the recognition of her work by the Queen of Sweden is a source of pride for everyone”.

The prestigious journal “International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology” will publish this important advance in medicine.
