Credit card spending intentions for Christmas purchases increase in 2013 compared to previous years. In 2011, the Portuguese intended to spend 260 euros, a figure that dropped to 251 euros in 2012.

The highest value in three years was reached: the Portuguese estimate to spend, on average, 262 euros on their credit card this Christmas.

It should also be noted that 2% of respondents estimate spending above 1.000 euros, an intention that until now had never been verified in this study by the Cetelem Observer on “Christmas Shopping Intentions”.

The same study indicates that the Portuguese choose less and less to use a credit card. This Christmas, only 13% of respondents admit that they intend to use their credit card to pay the expenses of the season. This value compares negatively with last year, when it was 24% and 2011 with 18%.

They are the youngest who have the least credit card and who also least want to use it at Christmas. 97% of individuals between 18 and 24 years of age do not have it and only 3% say they intend to use this method to pay for Christmas expenses.

Only the age group from 55 to 65 years has similar numbers. Of these, 93% do not have a credit card and only 4% will use it this Christmas.

The age group with the greatest use of credit cards is between 35 and 44 years old: “only” 61% do not have one and 23% expect to use it at Christmas.

Unsurprisingly, it is the higher classes that reveal the greatest intentions to use this payment method. However, in the AB/C1 class, 71% do not have a credit card and only 17% will use it this Christmas.

Despite this, compared to the lowest class (C2/D) we notice that the numbers are lower. 97% of subjects belonging to these socioeconomic classes do not have a credit card, and none of them intends to use it this Christmas.

Porto residents are the ones with the most credit cards. 31% have it and 14% will use it for Christmas shopping. On the other hand, people from Lisbon have a lower ratio: 79% do not have a credit card, but on the other hand there is a greater number of individuals using it (16%).

This study by Observador Cetelem on the “Intentions to Purchase of the Portuguese at Christmas 2013” was carried out in collaboration with Nielsen and applied, through a quantitative survey, to 500 individuals from Mainland Portugal, of both sexes, aged between 18 and 65 years old. , between the period 3-5 October 2013. The maximum error is +4,4 for a 95% confidence interval.
