Portugal, Cyprus, Croatia, Greece, Spain, Italy and Morocco are the seven countries that expect to see their joint candidacy of the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity approved this week during the 8th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, which is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from today, the 2nd, until the 7th of December.

Portugal has Tavira as its representative community. It was Tavira who ensured the technical process, which has a prior opinion favorable to the inscription by the Subsidiary Body of UNESCO for cultural and intangible heritage.

Seven States with millenary Mediterranean cultures subscribe to this transnational candidacy: Portugal (Tavira), Cyprus (Agros), Croatia (Hvar and Brac), Greece (Koroni), Spain (Soria), Italy (Cilento) and Morocco (Chefchaouen).

A Portuguese delegation It is made up of representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Foreign Affairs, the Mayor of Tavira, Jorge Botelho, and the head of the Municipality's Culture, Heritage and Museums Division, Jorge Queiroz, who is already in Baku.

Jorge Queiroz, who is monitoring the progress of work at the Facebook page dedicated to the Support of the Mediterranean Diet for Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, has just informed that «according to the agenda now approved, the voting for the inclusion of the Mediterranean Diet in the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a candidacy that Portugal is part of with Tavira as the representative community, should take place on the afternoon of next Wednesday. Thursday, December 4, or if there are delays on Thursday morning'.

The opening session of the 8th session of the UNESCO IGC in Baku has already taken place. The session has a record number of 116 States present and more than 800 members from national delegations and observers.

The Mediterranean Diet is an ancient lifestyle, a cultural model resulting from ancestral wisdom, handed down from generation to generation, which encompasses productive and extractive techniques and practices, namely, agriculture and fishing, ways of preparation, preparation and consumption of food , festivities and convivialities, oral traditions and artistic expressions.

Mediterranean cultures are cultures of sharing and mutual help in the community, where sociabilities play an important role.

If this classification is achieved, Portugal will have, after fado, its second inscription on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, being the first time that the Algarve will see its culture recognized by UNESCO.
