The “Luz da Paz” ceremony took place this Saturday, 21st, at the Igreja Matriz in Albufeira and on Sunday, 22nd, at the Igreja de São José, in Ferreiras.

The tradition was repeated once again for the eighth consecutive year, in an initiative by the Municipality that has been receiving enormous receptivity from the religious community and population in general.

The parish church of Albufeira and the Church of São José, in Ferreiras, were filled with faithful this weekend to receive the “Luz da Paz”, symbol of brotherhood among peoples, represented by the flame coming from the Church of the Nativity, in Bethlehem, place where Jesus was born.

The event was attended by the Mayor Carlos Silva e Sousa, members of the Executive, President of the Municipal Assembly, Paulo Freitas, Scout Groups of Albufeira and Paderne, among other entities.

Since 2005, the Municipality has been hosting the event in this festive season, within the scope of the Twinning Agreement that Albufeira has with the Austrian city of Linz. The ceremony also serves to strengthen the ties between the two municipalities, namely through bringing their citizens closer together, valuing friendship and solidarity.

The ceremony was attended by the Albufeira and Paderne Scouts, who enlivened the moment with beautiful musical notes and who at the end carried the “Luz da Paz” to the headquarters of their communities.

Carlos Silva e Sousa said he is proud “for once again the Municipality is associated with this tradition that was born more than 20 years ago with Austrian television and which symbolizes the defense of Peace, Fraternity and Equality among peoples”.

“Luz da Paz” will remain in the building of the Town Hall of Albufeira, on the first floor, until January 6th, Epiphany, so that everyone who wants to can come here and light a candle for Peace in the world.
