The Secretary of State for the Environment will travel to Lagoa tomorrow, the 25th, at the invitation of the Mayor Francisco Martins, to sign the contract for the Footbridge and Rail Contract between Algar Seco and Forte de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação at Carvoeiro Beach.

The project is the result of a partnership between the Municipality of Lagoa and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).

This intervention is articulated with the set of actions planned by the Municipality and the APA for Praia de Carvoeiro and adjacent coastal areas, which are particularly important because they are located next to an important center of tourist activity.

In this context, Largo da Praia and various facilities for fishermen and operators of small maritime-tourism activities, as well as restrooms, spas and others to support bathing activities and related to the enjoyment of the coast, have already been reclassified.

The Algar Seco road was also repaired, in order to favor pedestrian circulation and improve the scenic environment of the site with the passage of electrical and aerial communications infrastructure to underground ones.

The old staircase that gives access to Paraíso beach was also reclassified and lit using photovoltaic energy.

The requalification works that will now begin focus on a set of trails that are much sought after by hikers, despite their «dangerousness in view of their location and terrain topography».

These routes link the Algar Seco – an interesting geological formation on the limestone cliffs of the coast – to the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação Fortress, overlooking Carvoeiro Beach.

"It is hoped that this requalification work will translate into preferential use of the walkways and rail, making pedestrian circulation through the space safer and more attractive, as well as allowing the enjoyment of people with reduced mobility, a group with a growing expression among those who visit us”, stress those responsible for the project.

The construction of a square in the area surrounding the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação is also planned, to «give the due dignity to this ancient structure for the defense of the Coast».
